Alabama Select Commission on High School Graduation and Student Dropouts
The Alabama Select Commission on High School Graduation and Student Dropouts was appointed by the Governor, Lt. Governor, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court in July 2009. This diverse group of individuals set out to identify those factors that have led Alabama to this point in the national dropout epidemic and develop a set of recommendations that, when fully implemented, should have a significant and positive effect on thestudents currently attending our public schools, the communities within which they live, and our state.
The recommendations contained within this Executive Summary are simply a beginning of an ongoing and intensive body of work and should not be viewed as all inclusive. A recommendation will be forthcoming from the Chairman extending the life of the Commission for a five-year period to ensure continuation of the work and, equally as important, accountability for results.
The ambitious goal of this Commission is to see a 25% reduction in our dropout rate by 2015 using as a baseline the dropout rate for the 2008-2009 academic year. It will be through the collaborative efforts of all of Alabama’s citizens, in partnership with our business community, that we see this goal become a reality.
